WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Gender discrimination

Do you agree with President Duterte’s preference to appoint males as Ombudsman and Chief Justice?

Anyone, and I mean any gender, can handle those government positions. There is no superior gender. What should matter are the person’s capabilities, skills and commitment to serve. The late senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago had more balls than her male colleagues.

I believe that anyone can be the Ombudsman if he or she has the right motivations. – LEEN ALFRED SANSON, 20, Broadcasting student

Men and women should have the same opportunities. A government that discriminates women does not empower women. If the President has something against (former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes) Sereno, it is not right for him to generalize that all women are not fit to be public servants. We have laws giving equal opportunities to men and women. Digong must be out of his mind or just spewing statements at the heat of the moment. – EUREKA MAE TAGANILE, 20, Journalism student

I do not agree with President Duterte’s preference to appoint males only to the position of Chief Justice and Ombudsman. Gender does not define the capability of a person to handle such high government positions. – JESTER SAMONES, 20, Engineering student

In a country that claims to recognize gender equality, the presence of men and women in government must be felt. – EARL JONATHAN DUBLAS, 18, Grade 12 student

No. Duterte’s preference for male authority shows discrimination against women. – KYLE PATRICK NATIVIDAD, 20, Engineering student

Barangay, SK expectations

What are your expectations with newly elected barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials?

TANYA ERIKA GARCIA, 21, barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan voter

I do believe that the true essence of leadership is the capacity to translate the vision into reality. – REGINE PUERTO, student

– ALFONSO GABUNAS, security guard

I hope they will do their best to continue good governance and help make the Philippines drug-free. They ran for that position; they must have knowledge about their responsibilities. They must have plans and programs for the good of the youth. They must be leaders not just in words but in deeds. – ROGER PAUL TIMOTHY LACUARTA, student

I have to lower my standards. Leadership and management in the barangay could be bought for P200. The people of my barrio elected incompetent kagawads both in barangay and SK level. There’s this barangay kagawad who, for power, betrayed a kin. Another one is corrupt. I bet they do not know the first rule of leadership is honesty.

Basically they will do the same things like paliga, pa-disco and paduding. In the end the community is at a loss. It’s just a matter of time before my kasimarrios will find themselves in the middle of lies and deception. – BRYAN CASAIG, student
