What People Say: Boracay shutdown, taxi fare hike

Is there really a need to totally close Boracay Island for rehabilitation?

Yes, I agree. Boracay has done a good job of satisfying tourists both foreign and local. Closing it for a certain period for rehabilitation is an act of preservation and even beautification.

It may be inconvenient for most inhabitants of the island but I believe the six-month period of closure would eventually pay off. — JUDELLE SACULO, 20, Nursing student

No, I do not agree with the total closure of Boracay. Many people would lose jobs and small businesses displaced. Boracay contributes greatly to the local and national economy.” — JOSEPH BERNARD MARZAN, 24, government employee

The closure is actually good not only to the island but also to the people of Boracay. This may be a lesson learned the hard way for businesspeople and the locals but I hope we can ponder upon this and make us all take care of nature’s gifts. Even islands need rehabilitation just like us, human beings.” — MAY FLORENCE TUBAL, faculty, Iloilo Merchant Marine School

Let me answer as a person who has nothing to do about that place: It’s YES for a speedy rehabilitation process. But if I put myself in the shoes of the people benefitting from that area, then NO. It’s a matter of strict implementation of the rules and focusing the rehabilitation to those areas with problems without depriving people of their rights such as the local residents of that place.” – MELINDA PALOMERO, 56, regular visitor of Boracay

Yes, I agree. Nowadays very polluted and congested na ang Boracay so to restore its natural beauty and preserve the environment it needs to be rehabilitated. — REMIA P. BAUTISTA, teacher, Department of Education, Dueñas, Iloilo

Yes. Very unclean na ang Boracay when we went there for a vacation last December. Anywhere may makita ka nga vendors and in those areas makita mo damo man nga mga basura. Very polluted na gid siya. — ROSANA FRANCIA, 42, overseas Filipino worker from Hong Kong

Should taxis increase their fare rate?

Okay lang magtaas sila ng pamasahe as long as ‘yung service nila is good and satisfying.  May mga reasons behind it like dahil may pagtaas din ng presyo ng gasolina or what.

— QUINNIE SEQUITO, student

Pabor man ko. Para man sa driver. Makabulig man sa amon. Indi man siling nga ang pasahero sige-sige. Ti gamay lang. Makabulig man sa amun eh. – JIONY GALVES, taxi driver
