LOOKING at the situation in the Western World, I think there will come a time when it will turn (relatively) inward and leave the world to its own problems.
For those who chafe against Western moralizing or interventionism, this is a good thing. For those who want to immigrate to Europe or the U.S., this will seem bad.
The closing of the gates and the building of walls will, no doubt, trigger a lot of intense feelings globally, but the United States, Australia and Europe is currently being demographically ruined by mass immigration.
This is why there is rioting in the United Kingdom, why Trump is getting elected in the US, and why European Union countries are talking about remigration. In the UK, for example, White British went from 99% of the population to about 75%, and as more immigrants flood in that figure will go further down. Other Western countries are facing similar issues.
Now, imagine how the Filipino people would react if our own demographics went to 75% Filipino. I can imagine we would share similar sentiments.
Of course, the situation with the West is different. Other nations, including the Philippines have strict notions of who is a national and who is not.
The West is not expected to have similar standards, and they are beginning to chafe of being accused of racism when they do. If this trend continues, expect the Western World to close its borders and possibly embrace a remigration policy.
The other scenario is that Western countries will do nothing and eventually, they will be overwhelmed by mass immigration. The UK will end up looking like a semi-Islamic country and the US demographically becomes similar to a Latino nation, which leads to the follow up question: Why bother going there at all?
In both scenarios, the West will inevitably change one way or another. Millions of Filipinos may want to immigrate to Western countries, but they should remember that billions of other nationals have the same wish. That is not sustainable./PN
