BORACAY – The Boracay Foundation, Inc. (BFI) expressed concern over the fate of thousands of workers as this world-famous island faces a closure threat.

The BFI also warned of huge economic loss in the island resort if the shutdown pushes through.

Malay councilor Maylynn Aguirre-Graf, president of the BFI, said over 90,000 workers and 40,000 residents will be affected if ever Boracay gets closed.

President Rodrigo Duterte on Feb. 9 threatened to close the island if its environmental problems remain unsolved after six months.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Western Visayas earlier said it will recommend a two-month closure of businesses in the island.

“Some large resorts in Boracay has reported earning revenues daily of around P3 million. This means that both the government and the private sector may lose billions of pesos if Boracay would indeed be closed,” Aguirre-Graf said.

The BFI considers partnering with the local government unit and other stakeholders to appeal to the President to reconsider the closure threat.

“For years, it’s the national government that is really benefiting from Boracay. Some government officials are making Boracaya milking cow. In 2017, the national government earned around 56 billion from Boracay alone,” the councilor said./PN
