BACOLOD City – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is probing the string of hackings targeting the social media pages of local government units (LGUs) and public officials in Negros Occidental.

Atty. Renoir Baldovino, NBI-Bacolod chief, said they were waiting the official request of the involved LGUs and public officials, although the NBI Cybercrime Unit has already begun the investigation.

Baldovino said they will get in touch with the NBI Cybercrime Division in Manila.

Over the past few days, hackers targeted the official Facebook page of the MassKara Festival by posting lewd videos.

A few days later hackers targeted the Facebook pages of 3rd District’s Cong. Francisco “Kiko” Benitez and Cadiz City Government’s “Bilis Cadiz Ugyon Cadiznon.”

Reports also surfaced that hackers attempted to hack the official social media page of Victorias City’s Mayor Javier Miguel “Javi” Benitez, although they were unsuccessful.

On Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 22, the Facebook page of the Municipality of E.B. Magalona was also hacked.

The Cadiz City Government’s and Cong. Benitez’s Facebook pages have since been recovered. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
