BORACAY — Authorities will examine next week the human bones found last week at a construction site in Sitio Cagban, Brgy. Manoc-manoc here.
They will be sent to Kalibo, Aklan, for examination by a Philippine National Police medico-legal examiner on May 27, said Supt. Georby Manuel, chief of the provincial Scene of the Crime Operatives.
Manuel said it “was not immediately known if the remains were those of a male or a female.”
Through the examination, the medico-legal examiner can “determine the approximate age of the deceased,” said Manuel.
DNA may also be extracted from the bones for a more accurate identification of the victim and possible identification of relatives, he said.
Construction workers building a new hotel in Brgy. Manoc-manoc have unearthed a skull and three other pieces of bones on Monday last week.
A backhoe operator, Carlito Urbano, told the police that they found the bones while they were excavating at the site.
Urbano said he immediately informed his superior, who in turn sought help from the Boracay Tourist Assistance Center (BTAC).
Police said Urbano’s claim was supported by a laborer for the ECSI Construction Corp., Joeberto Dacanaria, who said they found the bones at about 12:30 a.m.
Police said this was the first incident that bones were unearthed from Boracay soil that they could recall.
Manuel said police investigators were yet to find out if the site was whether a burial ground or a crime site — more specifically, if the victim was whether a victim of summary execution or was indiscriminately buried in the area.
Senior Supt. Samuel Nacion, police provincial director, directed the BTAC to conduct a thorough investigation.
The bones are currently with the Boracay police./PN
