BORACAY – Sandcastles are one of the attractions in this world-famous island. So why would police destroy them?

According to Senior Inspector Jose Mark Anthony Gesulga, head of the Boracay Tourist Assistance Center, his personnel were only destroying sandcastles that are “illegal.”

By illegal, Gesulga means sandcastles whose makers do not possess a mayor’s permit.

Gesulga added that the destruction of illegal sandcastles in this island stemmed from the complaints that some residents filed at the police station.

The residents reported that some sandcastle makers are “extorting and harassing” foreign tourists, especially during the last holiday season.

Some sandcastle makers charge the foreign tourists as high as P500 for taking photos with the sandcastles.

The complaints were raised during the municipal advisory council meeting, said Gesulga.

The police have been destroying illegal sandcastles in the island since Jan. 8.

Gas bottles were also recovered from the sandcastle makers.

Gesulga said the illegal sandcastle makers pour the contents of these bottles at the beachfront, which may result to environmental damages.

As to how many sandcastles were destroyed, the police have yet to present a count.

“We will be doing this operation from time to time until we are guaranteed that there are no more illegal sandcastle makers operating in Boracay,” Gesulga said./PN
