ILOILO City – A 32-year-old widow from Barangay Tabuc Suba, Jaro district claimed a police officer of the Jaro police station sexually assaulted her.

She was forced to perform fellatio on him, the widow complained at the Women and Children’s Protection Desk of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) on June 3.

The assault happened past 9 p.m. on June 2 at the second floor of her house, according to the complainant.

She identified the police officer as 30-year-old Mark Ken Canillo, a member of Jaro police station’s drug enforcement team and resident of Barangay Benedicto, Jaro.

Canillo refused to be interviewed. ICPO director Senior Superintendent Remus Zacharias Canieso ordered an investigation and reassigned the policeman to the Iloilo City Public Safety Company.

According to the woman, she met Canillo while on her way to a nearby house to supposedly join a vigil for a dead neighbor.

The police officer ordered her to take him to her house or he would file trumped-up drug charges against her, she said.

Canillo was not wearing a police uniform but she recognized him, according to the widow. He was the cop who previously arrested her brother for illegal drugs, she claimed.

Canillo, who appeared drunk, left her house after the sexual assault, said the woman.

A possible criminal case against Canillo would be rape with sexual assault, said Canieso.

But there may be administrative charges, too.

The National Police Commission – Region 6 will conduct a parallel investigation. Spokesperson Allen Camering said the probe would push through even if the woman won’t file a formal complaint such as for grave misconduct./PN
