‘Winning mentality’ key for triumph – Perasol

MANILA – University of the Philippines (UP) men’s basketball team head coach Dolreich “Bo” Perasol said it is important to have players with winning attitude for a team to be successful.

“The simplest way for having a chance of winning is to recruit winning players,” Perasol said in an interview with Iloilo’s Sports LANG. “So amo na siyang gustong ibutang sa team.”

According to the Ilonggo mentor, having a winning mentality is one of the attitudes he is looking for on the players he is recruiting for Fighting Maroons.

“There are players who are good but did not come from winning team,” he added. “When you decipher the character of a player, it is important if he has a winning attitude.”

Perasol recalled it was tough for him to recruit players during his early years as UP head coach since the players in his disposal then seemed contented with the team lagging behind the standings.

“Deeply inculcated na sa kanilang attitude na ang pagkapierde is ok lang. Sanay naman silang natatalo sa UAAP and it made me sad and angry in a way,” he added.

The Ilonggo mentor noted that, with the change in mindset of the UP men’s basketball team, it has now become easier for his coaching staff to recruit quality players from high school.

“With the players now willing to join us, ang pinakabudlay nga problem is how to explain sa ila ang role sa team,” Perasol said. “I tell that if they enter a winning team they have to make sacrifice and I am glad they are absorbing it.” /PN
