DUMAGUETE City – The Bacolod City delegation seized a runaway lead, surpassing nearest top-spot contender Negros Occidental by nearly 100 medals, to rightfully reign as the 2017 Palarong Negros Island Region (NIR) Meet champion, as the festivities winded down to a close on Wednesday.
Bacolod City took home 327 medals in total – on 156 gold, 94 silver and 77 bronze awards. Meanwhile, Negros Occidental settled for a distant 1st runner-up finish with 229 medals (73 gold, 83 silver, 73 bronze) as Bago City (26 gold, 34 silver, 32 bronze), Dumaguete City (25 gold, 33 silver, 42 bronze), and La Carlota City (19 gold, 20 silver, 19 bronze) followed behind to round out the Top 5 delegations.
Bacolod City also topped the 2017 NIR Para Games, where young differently-abled Negrense athletes got to compete, with its 40-medal haul (17 gold, 14 silver, 9 bronze). Cadiz City and Bayawan City para-athletes also shined to come in at second and third place, respectively, in the final medal tally.
Meanwhile, the surging Dumaguete cagers squandered their home-court advantage to fall to Bacolod City in the Secondary boy’s category, and hand over the gold medal on Tuesday at the Lamberto Macias Sports Center.
Luckily, their elementary boy’s counterparts maintained its momentum after handing an embarrassing lopsided 95-27 drubbing to Tanjay City on Tuesday at the St. Louis School – Don Bosco gymnasium, just two hours before the finale clash. The young gunners defended their floor against Negros Occidental, 59-52, to claim the championship throne.
Bacolod City mayor Evelio Leonardia congratulated his constituents on their triumph and wished them good luck in their training and preparation for the upcoming National Palaro.
“It is with immense pride and honor that I congratulate all the athletes of Bacolod City for winning the overall championship of the just-concluded 2017 Palarong NIR. We are very happy with the outstanding performance of our athletes, which we can only call as an overwhelming success,” said the Bacolod City mayor.
“We wish our gold medalists more power in the forthcoming 2017 Palarong Pambansa in April in Antique, and we fervently hope they will also bring home the national gold medals.”
Palarong NIR host Dumaguete welcomed some 12,000 student-athletes, coaches, technical officials and delegation heads from 16 school divisions in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental on Feb. 24, as festivities and contention kicked off to the tune of “One Island, One DepEd, One ASEAN”.
Sixteen school divisions clawed for a spot to represent the NIR region in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa set to be held in Antique on April.
Athletes competed in 22 sports events in various venues around Dumaguete, including the campuses of Silliman University, Foundation University and St. Louis School – Don Bosco./PN
