Woman charged with fencing falls

ILOILO City – A 38-year-old vendor from Barangay Cabugao Sur, Santa Barbara, Iloilo had been arrested.

Lerna Suganob was charged with violation of Presidential Decree 1612, or the Anti-Fencing Law, police said.

Officers from the Santa Barbara police station served Suganob with a warrant of arrest at around 2:20 p.m. Monday in Barangay Cabugao Sur.

Under the law, “fencing” is “the act of any person who, with intent to gain for himself or for another, shall buy, receive, possess, keep, acquire, conceal, sell or dispose of, or shall buy and sell, or in any other manner deal in any article, item, object or anything of value which he knows, or should be known to him, to have been derived from the proceeds of the crime of robbery or theft.”

A “fence,” the law stated, “includes any person, firm, association, corporation or partnership or other organization who/which commits the act of fencing.”

Penalties for violation of the law include various terms of imprisonment.

Suganob was hauled to the municipal police station’s custodial facility./PN
