BACOLOD City – A 72-year-old died in a fire that engulfed her house at Hacienda Luvina, Rurok Malipayon, Barangay Bacong in Bago City, Negros Occidental.

Lorenza Buenaflor was reportedly suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Her sibling, Leonita Pabella, sustained burn injuries.

Lorenza was in her room, where the fire reportedly started at around 10 a.m. on February 29.

It was only she and her in-law, also a person with disability, in the house during the incident.

According to Senior Fire Officer 3 Rustan Sayson, Bureau of Fire Protection Substation Commander, initial investigation suggests that the fire was caused by an electrical issue.

Meanwhile, the estimated damage reached P1,234,560.

Lorenza’s other sibling, Eleno, said it took them a while before they were able to contact the local fire authorities due to a lack of cellular connectivity in the area.

Firefighting lasted for about 30 minutes./PN
