KALIBO, Aklan – Women and children are encouraged to report to the local police’s Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) any kind of abuse against them.
The WCPD investigates crimes against women and children and files appropriate charges.
Police Officer 3 Merilyn Rello assured that they “[protect the] privacy of the victims and the confidentiality of cases.”
Fifty-seven cases of violations of the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act were recorded at the Kalibo police station from January to March.
Twenty-one were recorded in January, 18 in February and another 18 in March.
Most of the cases were women who experienced physical abuse from their husbands.
Other cases included sexual violence and psychological and economic abuse.
Moreover 31 cases of violations of the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act were recorded in the first quarter.
Ten violations were recorded in January, 13 in February and eight in March. They included psychological and physical abuses.
In January, two rape cases were also reported at the WCPD.
“Stop the abuse. Report the incidents … to the WCPD,” Rello said in a radio program. “Uniformed police officers are on duty 24/7” to respond.
Government agencies provide the victims protection and assistance. Minor victims are referred to the Department of Social Welfare and Development for proper counseling, said Rello. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
