‘WOMEN OF STRENGTH’: Empowered women leading with purpose

IN A WORLD where women continue to break boundaries and redefine leadership, a new generation of women leaders is proving that strength and compassion can go hand in hand. As we celebrate Women’s Month, we highlight the stories of five empowered women who are leading in their respective fields — each one a testament to the power of purpose, perseverance, and passion.

RAISA TREÑAS-CHU: Leading with Heart and Purpose
Executive Assistant to the Mayor, Iloilo City Government

For Raisa Treñas-Chu, leadership is more than just making decisions — it’s about building a community that thrives. But stepping into politics as a woman hasn’t always been easy.

“Leadership has often been seen as a man’s world, and stepping into politics as a woman comes with its own set of challenges — being underestimated, facing doubts, and proving that strength and empathy can go hand in hand,” she shares.

Instead of being discouraged, she remains focused on her purpose: creating lasting change for Iloilo City. As a mother, she finds strength in the dual roles she plays. “I wear many hats — wife, mother, daughter, and leader. Balancing personal life and public service is never easy, but it’s all about time management and setting clear priorities.”

One of her proudest moments is witnessing the impact of their programs — children gaining better access to education, families finding livelihood opportunities, and communities growing stronger.

“Just as I want the best for my own child, I want every Ilonggo family to have the same security and opportunities,” she says.

Looking ahead, she envisions more women stepping up in leadership roles: “A progressive Iloilo must be one where women’s voices are heard, valued, and respected.”

Her message to young Ilonggas? “Be strong, be kind, and never be afraid to use your voice. Lead with purpose, strength, and heart.”

MA. CRISTINA CABALHIN: Leading with Fairness and Faith
Vice President of Marketing & Corporate Affairs, MORE Electric and Power Corporation

For Ma. Cristina Cabalhin, leadership is about fairness and justice — ensuring that both the company and its consumers benefit. She views challenges not as roadblocks but as opportunities for growth.

“Managing customer concerns is never easy, but by addressing them effectively, we improve our services and create a better experience for everyone,” she says.

Balancing a demanding career and personal life requires clear priorities.

“I nurture my relationships and spiritual well-being. Prayer and reflection keep me grounded,” she shares.

Her advice for women striving for the same balance? “Build a support network, stay focused, and embrace challenges as opportunities.”
One of her most empowering moments was turning an irate customer into an advocate for their company: “Seeing the tangible results of my efforts reaffirmed my belief that staying true to my principles leads to meaningful success.”

She envisions a future where more women are in leadership roles, supported by inclusive policies that promote equality. “When women thrive, communities flourish,” she says.

Her message to young girls: “Believe in yourself and the power of your voice. Your worth is not defined by what you achieve, but by who you are inside. Be bold, be fearless, and always shine your light for others.”

FSINSP JASMINE MECENAS: Breaking Barriers in the Fire Service
Acting Chief, Fire Safety Enforcement Division, BFP6

In a field traditionally dominated by men, Jasmine Mecenas has proven that women are just as capable of leading and protecting communities.

“Being a firefighter is physically demanding, and at first, even I had doubts about whether I could keep up,” she admits.

But through rigorous training and mentorship, she overcame those doubts, proving that strength isn’t defined by gender.

She also had to push through gender biases and break into the “boys’ club” culture within the fire service: “I built trust by showing that teamwork and collaboration matter more than outdated stereotypes.”

One of her proudest achievements was receiving the Best Junior Officer of the Year award, a recognition of her leadership and dedication: “It was a moment of validation — not just for me, but for all the women in the fire service proving that we belong here.”

Over the next decade, she hopes to see more women in leadership roles, better training and equipment tailored for female firefighters, and a workplace where skills and dedication — not gender — determine one’s success.

To young girls who dream of following in her footsteps, she shares this wisdom: “You are capable of anything. Never let anyone limit you. Being empowered isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being brave enough to keep going, even when things get tough.”

RHEA PEÑAFLORIDA: Empowering Women Through Business
Vice President for Operations, Fiesta Philippines

Rhea Peñaflorida’s journey from a registered nurse to a successful entrepreneur is a story of reinvention and resilience.

“Understanding financial statements instead of reading patient charts was a complete shift,” she recalls, adding that she overcame this by taking business courses and learning through experience.

Balancing personal life and entrepreneurship is an ongoing process, but she believes in setting priorities and finding time for self-care.
“I do yoga, dancing, and paddleboarding — activities that keep me grounded,” she said.

She feels most empowered when she empowers others. One of her passion projects, “Beauty Behind Bars”, provides livelihood opportunities for women inmates at the Iloilo City District Jail.

“The income they earn helps provide for their families, even sending their children to school,” she shares.

In the next decade, she hopes to see more women in leadership, greater inclusivity in the workplace, and better opportunities for women entrepreneurs, especially in rural communities.

Her message to young girls: “Break stereotypes but never lose your femininity. We can assert our strengths while still nurturing the love and gentleness that bind our communities together.”

KRISTINE YAP: Championing Women’s Voices and Leadership
SM Group Marketing Manager – Visayas 3

For Kristine Yap, the journey as a woman in her field has been filled with challenges, particularly in making her voice heard.
“I’ve dealt with times when it was hard to be heard. Instead of backing down, I made sure to learn and grow so I could stand out. I built a strong circle of supportive people, which helped me overcome these hurdles,” she says.

Balancing personal life and career is always a challenge, but she makes it work through prioritization and setting boundaries: “Some days are for work; others are for family. My tip: find people who support your goals and celebrate every little win.”

One of her most empowering moments was leading a successful project that inspired others.

“Knowing my work could motivate and make a difference was a good feeling,” Kristine states.

Looking ahead, she hopes for a future where more women hold leadership positions and workplaces are truly inclusive: “I want to see more women in top jobs, creating fair and equal workplaces. It’s important that women help each other succeed and have their voices heard.”

To young girls who look up to her, she shares this advice: “Trust your unique voice to make a change. Keep learning, support others, and choose uplifting friends. Remember, adapting and valuing your work will help you go far.”

Kristine dreams of a world where women are not just participants but leaders in every industry.

“I want to see workplaces where women support each other while breaking down barriers, proving that when we rise together, we create lasting change,” she adds.

Her final message to young girls: “Embrace your unique voice and dreams. Don’t be afraid to speak up and share your ideas. Surround yourself with people who lift you higher. Be curious, be brave, and believe in your power to make a difference.”

Each of these women is a testament to the power of determination, compassion, and resilience. They are breaking norms and proving that leadership is not about gender —it’s about vision and impact.

As we celebrate Women’s Month, let their stories inspire us to build a future where more women lead with confidence, where their voices are valued, and where every girl knows that she, too, can excel./PN
