MANILA – Robert “Toto” Landero of the Philippines failed in his bid for the WBA World minimumweight title after losing to Thammanoon Niyomtrong of Thailand via unanimous decision yesterday in Chonburi.
The 22-year-old Pontevedra, Negros Occidental native was simply overmatched against the experienced Niyomtrong. The judges’ scores were 110-119, 113-115, 111-117.
A WBC-EPBC minimumweight champion, Landero tried to keep in step with the Thai boxer in the early rounds but Niyomtrong was simply dominant with his counterpunches.
The Negrense fighter tried his best to make a dent on Niyomtrong’s defense in the middle rounds but the Thai boxer continued to find his way to wobble Landero with combinations.
In the remaining rounds, Landero was already gassed up and unable to execute a last push to overturn the outcome, with Niyomtrong already ahead in the scorecards.
His defeat made Landero’s slate slide to 10-2-2 (with two knockout wins) and put a stop at his two-match streak.
The 27-year-old Niyomtrong, on the other hand, extended his perfect run 17-0-0 with seven knockout victories./PN
