MANILA – Filipina wushu bet Divine Wally settled for a bronze medal in the women’s sanda event of the 2018 Asian Games on Wednesday night at the Jakarta International Expo in Indonesia.
Wally, a former world and Asian champion, failed to reach the championship round of the -52kg division after a 1-2 loss to Elaheh Marsoryan Samiroumi of Iran in the knockout semifinals.
After beating Selviah Pertiwi of Indonesia in the quarterfinal round, Wally started strong against Samiroumi and took a 1-0 lead after the first round but surrendered the next two to the taller foe.
Other Filipino wushu bets were not as fortunate as Wally – Jean Claude Saclag lost to India’s Surya Bahnu Partap Singh 0-2 in the quarterfinals of the men’s sanda -60kg.
Clemente Tagubara Jr. lost to Narender Grewal of India in men’s -60kg while Francisco Solis was defeated by Iat San Mio of Macao in -56kg – the Filipinos thus failed to reach the quarterfinal round.
Incheon Asian Games silver medalist Daniel Parantac failed to make a podium finish in men’s tajijian as he landed on ninth place out of 17 participants. The other Filipino bet, Jones Labares, placed 15th.
In women’s softball, the Philippine Blu Girls bounced back from a 1-11 defeat to powerhouse Japan on Tuesday with a 4-0 win over Indonesia on Wednesday at the Gelora Bung Karno field.
The Blu Girls can set up a gold medal match with Japan when it defeats Chinese Taipei in their final classification round match that was still being played as of this writing./PN
