MANILA – Western Visayas student athletes stamped class with seven medals including two golds in the karate event of the 2018 Batang Pinoy National Finals in Baguio City.
Joy Tubongbanua of Murcia, Negros Occidental captured gold in the 12-13 girls kumite before settling for bronze in the 10-11 advanced kata.
Rheihart Placido of Bacolod City also clinched a gold medal in the 12-13 boys intermediate kata while fellow Bacolodnon Rita Alexis Cuadra fell short of claiming a gold medal and brought home a silver in the 14-15 cadets girls advanced kata.
Clinching bronze medals for Region 6 were Negros’ Zyrhon Vallejera (11-12 advanced kata), Bacolod’s Kyle Francois Armada (14-15 cadets boys advanced kata) and Iloilo City’s Rare Hartha de Aras (10-11 girls kumite).
Meanwhile Bacolod added another arnis gold courtesy of Justin Kyle Melliza and Jean Elijah Beronio in team double weapon traditional. Another Bacolodnon, Micah Tanate, claimed gold in table tennis cadet girls singles.
Aklan got two silver medals from Christine Leire Malapit in taekwondo cadet female lightweight and Michael Lozada in 11-12 triathlon as swimmers Maria Reina Nazareta and Kyla Soguilon bagged a bronze each.
Aklanons also won three bronze medals in athletics – Christian Ote in secondary boys discus throw, Nina Fe Aquilissa in secondary girls long jump and Marian Milloroso in secondary girls javelin throw.
Negrenses Yessamin Carbonela and Ryle Simon Biadora also claimed a bronze medal each in the secondary girls 2000m walk and secondary boys 400m hurdles, respectively./PN
