KALIBO, Aklan – Two entrepreneurs from Aklan and Iloilo represented the Philippinesin the One Town, One Product (OTOP) Silapacheep Fair in Thailand.
Juler Fernandez of the JAF Handicraft and Piña Industry here produces handwoven fabrics and wearable items and crafts made from piña, silk, abaca, and cotton fibers.
On the other hand, Marjorie Segurigan, chairperson of the Indag-an Primary Multipurpose Cooperative from Barangay Indag-an, Miag-ao, Iloilo, produces hablon fabrics, barongs and scarves, among others.
The event organized by Thailand’s Community Development Department (CDD) highlighted traditional textiles produced in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations member countries.
Fernandez was able to personally introduce his products to Thailand Prime MinisterPrayut Chan-o-cha and the First Lady.
He said his products delighted the locals. The pineapple silk handwoven embroidered blouseswere “soldout,” he said.
Fernandez also learned about the unique indigo dyeing on pineapple fabric and the cottonweaving in Bangkok.
Promoting traditional handwoven fabric, exhibiting and selling his products, and representing the Philippines in Thailand were a “very rewarding” experience, he said.
The fair was held to “commemorate Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s Seventh Round Birthday Anniversary on Aug. 12, 2016, and honor her work and relentless contribution to [providing] alternative livelihood [to] the people.”
It also aimed to increase the marketing channel for potential OTOP producers/entrepreneurs, according to the CDD. (PIA/PN)
