SAN JOSE, Antique – The WVRAA basketball team settled for second place in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa secondary boys’ basketball tournament after a 75-48 defeat to the National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) in the finals on Saturday at the at the Evelio B. Javier Memorial Sports Complex.

Despite only suiting up with eight players for the entire tournament, the NCRAA squad headed by Adamson University’s Encho Serrano and Ilonggo Gerry Abadiano just proved too difficult to dominate in WVRAA’s quest to to regain the Palaro title.

Ang pinakaunang challenge talaga namin ay hindi kumpleto lineup namin,” said NCRAA head coach Goldwyn Monteverde. “So very proud pa rin ako na nasa mindset pa rin na manalo talaga.”

NCR opened the match with a 14-5 advantage before WVRAA tried to rally back on three free throws by Ilonggo Ryan Calama-an. However, the combo of Serrano and Abadiano pulled NCRAA up to a 30-18 edge.

NCRAA continued its dominance in the second quarter onwards, with Calama-an rendered a non-factor, to widened the lead further to its largest at 30 markers in the second half.

“Even if we fell short, I am still proud of the fight my players put on,” said WVRAA head coach Rodel Camacho. “From the start, no one expected us to be here in the finals. I believe we put up a good fight in front of our fellow Ilonggos.”

Not just in basketball, WVRAA athletes also fell short against NCRAA in the championship match of secondary boys’ football (3-1) and in elementary boys’ volleyball (17-25, 25-11, 25-22).

WVRAA also settled for silver in elementary boys’ football, defeated by Central Visayas, 1-0. But, WVRAA managed to add a last-minute gold medal on the final day when it defeated NIRAA, 2-1, in the futsal finals.

WVRAA also had three bronze medal finishes – on the last day of the annual Palaro – in the elementary boys’ baseball when it won over Region IV (13-7), in secondary girls’ volleyball against CLRAA (23-25, 25-21, 25-17) and in secondary girls’ basketball against Region I (56-37)./PN
