ILOILO City – Confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in Western Visayas are now a few rungs of hitting the 600 mark after the Department of Health (DOH) Region 6 reported 41 additional infections on Monday.
These new cases, majority were locally stranded individuals (LSIs), brought to 593 the region’s tally, according to Dr. Marie Jocelyn Te, medical coordinator for emerging and reemerging infectious diseases of DOH-6.
On Sunday, DOH-6 also announced that 91 out of 269 laboratory tests conducted by the Western Visayas Medical Center sub-national laboratory came out positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19.
This was the highest number of cases detected in a day in the region; the first was on June 29 when 33 cases were recorded.
This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Several potential vaccines are currently undergoing clinical trials.
