VIGAN, Ilocos Sur – Western Visayas clinched a quarterfinals seat in the 61st Palarong Pambansa secondary girls volleyball after a 25-11, 25-16 sweep of CAR on Tuesday at the Sto. Domingo Gym.
With its usual contributors struggling heavily, Alyssa Bertolano, Joan Doguna and Kiesha Bedonia picked up the cudgels for the Region 6 squad to clinch its third victory in as many matches in Group C.
“They might say a win is a win but I am not happy with our performance,” said WV head coach Ian Macariola. “I just don’t know, but our players, especially the veterans, are still playing below what is expected of them.”
Macariola hopes they will be able to resolve their mistakes as they aim to clinch the top seed in the group when they face Cagayan de Oro at 12 noon today.
Still in volleyball, WV elementary girls scored their second victory in three games as they edged Ilocos Region 25-18, 19-25, 25-19 while elementary boys cruised to a three-set win over CAR.
In secondary boys basketball, WV recovered from a heartbreaking opening-day loss as it scored a 106-85 domination over CAR Tuesday afternoon at the Quirino Stadium.
Outgoing veterans Mark Nonoy, Jean Raven Beliran and Jesse Sullano stepped up on the offensive end for the WV cagers, getting up from a 63-68 loss to Cavite on Monday.
Holding to a slim 18-17 lead at the end of the opening period, WV made its move in the second period behind Nonoy, Beliran, Reynold Tupaz, and Paolo Villariza for a 44-39 edge.
The lead grew further in the second half with Nonoy, Beliran teaming up with Sullano and Vic Demadara on the offensive end en route to build their largest lead in the match at 21 points./PN
