ILOILO City – Western Visayas logged 355 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on Saturday, so far its highest number of cases recorded in a single day.
The sharp spike was deemed a result of the mass testing carried out in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental last week.
Department of Health (DOH) Region 6 Case Bulletin No. 162 showed that 237 of the new cases were from Bacolod City and 48 were from Negros Occidental.
The other new cases were from Iloilo City, 40; Capiz, 15; Iloilo, 11; Antique, two; and Guimaras, two.
Aklan had no new COVID-19 cases on Saturday.
Also, 336 of the new cases were local transmissions, eight were returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs), one an authorized person outside of residence (APORs), another one was a locally stranded individual (LSIs), and nine were for verification.
The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales.
These droplets also land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.
The DOH-6 also reported 134 patients who overcame COVID-19, bringing the region’s total number of recovered cases to 2,862.
The total COVID-19 deaths, on the other hand, climbed to 87 with an additional one on Saturday.
The total confirmed cases in the region now stand at 5,701 (2,752 active cases as of Sept. 5).
