ILOILO City – The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) recorded 327 cases of suicide in 2021.
Iloilo province had the most number of cases at 89 (78 males, 11 females).
Negros Occidental recorded 79 cases (69 males, 10 females).
According to PRO-6 spokesperson Police Lieutenant Colonel Arnel Solis, most of the victims were between 18 and 30 years old (124 cases) and 45 years old and over (108 cases).
“Most victims killed themselves due to health problems, distraught love life, and family concerns,” Solis added.
The other areas with suicides were the following:
* Aklan – 36 (32 males, four females)
* Antique – 37 (30 males, seven females)
* Bacolod City – 18 (13 males, five females)
* Capiz – 39 (32 males, seven females)
* Guimaras – 11 (eight males, three females)
* Iloilo City – 18 (16 males, two females)
“Ang members sang family need to talk sa mga bata, bana kag asawa para ma-address ang problema kag indi magresulta sa suicide,” Solis said.
For this year, Iloilo province already recorded six suicides this month. The most recent was on Wednesday, Jan. 19 – a senior citizen hanged himself from a tree.
The victim was reportedly suffering from a nervous breakdown./PN
