MANILA – Western Visayas-native track athletes got University of Santo Tomas into a winning start in the UAAP Season 81 athletics Wednesday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Reigning MVP Louielyn Pamatian successfully defended the women’s 800m run with a time of 2 minutes and 14.65 seconds. Her schoolmate Jie Anne Calis settled for a bronze medal.
It was just the first event of Pamatian, a native of Bago City, Negros Occidental. She was also set to participate in the women’s 200m, 400m and 1,500m races for the last time in her UAAP career.
“I will try my best to win my remaining events and help UST win the overall championship again this year. This is my final year with the school,” Pamatian said.
Aira Teodosio of Silay City, Negros Occidental also had a winning start as she set a UAAP record in hammer throw with 46.12m. Himamaylan City native Luz Delfin settled for silver with a 41.38m heave.
Iloilo City native Elizabeth Capioso, meanwhile, delivered a gold medal for the University of the Philippines as she topped the 5km walk. Aklanon Ma. Jessa Valeriano of Far Eastern University landed on third place./PN
