KALIBO, Aklan – Disaster risk reduction and management volunteers in Western Visayas were acknowledged during the 19th Gawad Kalasag National Awards at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria in Quezon City.

The Dec. 11 awarding ceremony organized by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) put the spotlight on nongovernment organizations, individuals, local disaster risk reduction and management offices, members of the private sector, and government organizations for their humanitarian service this year.

The Amity Volunteer Brigade of Bacolod Cit, Negros Occidental got the first place in the best volunteer organization category of the awards while Boracay Fire, Rescue and Ambulance Volunteers, Inc. of Malay, Aklan came in second.

The Capiz Emergency Response Team, on the other hand, placed second in the best government emergency management services basic search and rescue category.

The Adventist Medical Center in Bacolod City was declared the best private hospital followed by the Panay Health Care Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Kalibo, Aklan.

KAMI SUNOI (Kami ang Mabulig sa Inyo Saligan Utod Ninyo sa Oras sang Ital-ital), Inc. of Binalbagan, Negros Occidental landed in second spot in the awards’ best people’s organization category.

Academic institutions were also recognized during the ceremony, like the Capiz State University-Roxas City campus that landed in third place in the awards’ best higher educational institution category and the Sipitan-Badiang Day Care Center in Guimbal, Iloilo that got the best early learning center award in the rural category.

The day care center was also given the Hall of Fame Award in the same category.

First place winners received P100,000 cash prize while second placers, P75,000, and third placers, P50,000. All winners got plaques of recognitions from the NDRRMC. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
