SAN JOSE, Antique – The Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) delegation took home a total of 107 medals – with 38 gold, 29 silver and 40 bronze finishes – for third place in the final medal tally of the 2017 Palarong Pambansa which closed on Saturday.
National Capital Region retained the overall championship with a 98-66-45 medal haul followed by Region IV-A Calabarzon at 41-57-57. Meanwhile, Negros Island Region Athletic Association (NIRAA) finished at fourth with 26-27-36.
Edna Magtubo nabbed her third and fourth gold medals of the competition when she topped the elementary girls’ 800-meter run before teaming up with Hazel Malco, Rezen Albano and Rica Joy Ignacio in the 4×100 meters event.
Aklanon swimming sensation Kyla Soguilon also added to her gold medal total when she ruled the 12 and under elementary girls’ 50-meter freestyle event. Ghennie Luna and Jerson Parreno also clinched gold medals in wushu.
Claiming silver medals in the final day were swimmer Guiliver Clemente in the 12 and under free style and 100-m breaststroke event, Jake Lxylyn Ladrillo in girls’12 and under 100-meter breaststroke, Zyron Palec in the 200-meter dash, Edraline Celestial in yje 800-m run, and Angelica Saludares in wushu.
Also contributing silver are Martin and Moises Bito-onon, Jiro Duron and Earl Dublas in the 13-17 400-meter freestyle boys’; Caitlin Estepar, Camille Belandres, Stephany Sa-ac and Nicole Pamintuan in 13-17 400-meters freestyle girls’; and Faizal Salasim, Christiane Tiongson, Aaron Merin and Noren Lachica in the 4×100 meter relay.
Bronze medalists are Moises Bito-onon in swimming, Checy Telesforo in chess, Clark Golez in badminton, Renz Montano and Isaac Golez in boxing, as well as Edraline Celestial and Rica Joy Ignacio in athletics.
Other third place finishers are Palec, Roy Bartolome, Ivan Gaylan and Reynante Delandra in athletics, and the 12 and under 400-meter freestyle team of Juddsen Em, Jennuel de leon, Anrei Dela Pena and Clemente.
The NIRAA, meanwhile, mounted a last day gold medal rally to move up to fourth place. Joshua Cuarte and Clarence Villaflor had a 1-2 finish in the elementary boys’ singles badminton.
Other gold medalists for the Negros Island region are Villaflor and Reza Tolosa in mixed doubles, Alexa Milliam in singles elementary tennis; Hartreuse Alonzo, Kris Jayson Estura and Gabriel Flores in Team Olympic round archery, and boxer Junary Garcia in the pinweight division./PN
