THE Negros Occidental girls’ volleyball team tempers its expectations as it begins its campaign in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet on Sunday in Iloilo City.

Key player Marianne Sotomil said they are excited at the same time nervous as they aim to win in this year’s WVRAA, which serves as 2018 PalarongPambansa qualifier.

“We’ve been through a lot preparing for WVRAA,” Sotomil told Panay News. “Actually we are racing against time because the team still needs to polish a lot of things.”

“Our aim is really to top this tournament so that we will qualify to PalarongPambansa, which will be a ticket for some of my teammates to be discovered,” added Sotomil, who is set to play for the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons when she gets to college.

Also part of the Negros squad were Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts standouts RheanAlmendralejo, KieshaBedonia, Alyssa Bertolano, Shane Carmona, Joan Doguna, NohlinJundana, MarixiMaligmat, Joan Monares, and Jeanny Padilla.

Mentored by Ian Macariola, the team also tapped ShairaJardio of Rafael B. Lacson Memorial High School in Talisay City and Erika Deloria, who is from Trinity Christian School.

“We are not representing Tay Tung langnaman but the whole Negros Occidental so we also tapped two players from outside,” said Tay Tung vice president for sports Jose Montalbo.

Thunderbolts earned the right to represent Negros Occidental in the regional sports meet after topping the PalarongPanlalawigan secondary girls’ volleyball tournament in December last year./PN
