Almost 4,000 athletes in regional games in Iloilo

ILOILO City – A total of 3,688 athletes from six provinces are set to compete in the 2018 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet that opens today at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

Iloilo had the biggest delegation with 682, followed by Aklan (660), Negros Occidental (643), Antique (582), Capiz (578), and Guimaras (544), provincial Sports Development Officer Ray Cabarles told Panay News.

“Just as in the previous editions, Iloilo remains the favorite delegation to dominate the WVRAA Meet but we expect them to be challenged this year as Negros Occidental returns to the competition after two years,” Cabarles said.

From Feb. 18 to 23, athletes will compete in basketball, 3-on-3 basketball, volleyball, football, athletics, billiards, and boxing.

Other sports to be played are arnis, archery, badminton, baseball, chess, futsal, gymnastics, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, wrestling, wushu, para games, pencak silat, and dance sports.

Today there will be a parade at 2 p.m. from the Iloilo provincial capitol on Bonifacio Drive to the Iloilo Sports Complex in Barangay Magsaysay, La Paz district.

A Governor’s Night will be held at 6 o’clock tonight at Casa Real de Iloilo (old capitol). The closing ceremonies were set on the 23rd.

Among the delegates were 2,953 athletes, 493 coaches, 79 assistant coaches, and 163 chaperones, according to the event’s Regional Screening and Accreditation Committee.

The delegates will be billeted in the following schools:

* Baluarte Elementary School – Aklan

* A. Montes I Elementary School – Guimaras

* La Paz I Elementary School – Negros Occidental

* Mandurriao Elementary School – Capiz

* Iloilo Central Elementary School – Antique

* Iloilo National High School – officiating officials and regional working committees

Aside from the Iloilo Sports Complex, playing venues include Pavia National High School, Iloilo National High School, La Paz plaza, Powerhouse Sports Hub, Robinsons Jaro, Jaroplaza gym, Iloilo Girl Scouts Council, Central Philippine University, Western Institute of Technology, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University, West Visayas State University, PAREF-Westbridge School for Boys, National Food Authority(Jaro), SM City mall, and Iloilo Science and Technology University.

Cabarles said the capitol allocated P5.7 million for the hosting and P16 million for the delegates.

The Department of Education – Division of Iloilo provided P800,000 for the incentives of technical officials while the Iloilo City government released P5.7 million for hosting and delegation, he said.

The WVRAA Meet “serves as the place for Western Visayan athletes to show their talent” and gives them a chance to “get an invite from national universities,” said Cabarles./PN
