MANILA – Following his impressive performance with the West Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) secondary boys’ basketball team in the just-concluded 2017 Palarong Pambansa, Ilonggo Ryan Calama-an is set to take his talents to the National University Bullpups.

WVRAA head coach Rodel Camacho confirmed the development to Panay News on Sunday. The lanky Ilonggo forward had also auditioned and caught the attention of the La Salle Greenhills Greenies.

“No doubt about it, Ryan is headed to NU,” Camacho said. “He tried out and was accepted at La Salle Greenhills, but nagbago ang isip niya upon learning that La Salle is an all-boys school.”

“Also kasi kapag sa La Salle-Greenhills kasi siya, babalik siya sa Grade 11 unlike kapag nasa NU siya, diretso na siya ng Grade 12 and next year nasa college na siya,” he added.

The 6-foot-4 forward played a vital role for the WVRAA team in the secondary boys’ basketball tournament before falling short in the finals against NCR, which is curiously handled by incoming Bullpups mentor Goldwyn Monteverde.

Calama-an, for his part, said he is excited to play with the Bullpups, where he is expected to play a huge role following the graduation of star forward John Lloyd Clemente.

Ang pangarap ko po talaga ay maging professional player at makalaro sa PBA at kapag nasa NU ako malapit na ako run,” Calama-an said. “Pero ang focus ko muna ay sa NU high school.”

Calama-an, who was cited part of the Palarong Pambansa Mythical Five, played a huge role in his squad’s championship bids in the 2016 Iloilo Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) and 2017 WVRAA meets.

Calama-an was also a member of the Iloilo basketball squad that took home the championship in the Visayas leg, and silver in the national level of the Batang PBA tournament last year./PN
