WVSU swimmers shine in National SCUAA Meet

MANILA – Swimmers from West Visayas State University had a dominant performance in the National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (NSCUAA) Meet 2023 on Tuesday at the New Clark City Aquatic Center in Capas, Tarlac.

Moses Oliver Bito-onon continued his gold medal haul as he finished on top in the men’s 100-meter freestyle and 4×50-meter freestyle relay in addition to his previous golds in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke.

Bito-onon also delivered three silver medals for the Western Visayas delegation as he finished second in the 4×50-meter medley relay, men’s 50-meter backstroke, and 50-meter butterfly events.

Moses’ brother, Martin Alphonse Bito-onon, was also part of the men’s 4×50-meter freestyle relay team that won a gold medal. He also had a silver in the 50-meter backstroke event.

Vhee Junnyne Militar also made her presence felt with a gold medal in the 50-meter backstroke, a silver medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay, and bronze medals in the 100-meter and 50-meter breaststroke events.

Dr. Richard Gabayoyo, WVSU sports director, said he was proud of the achievements of the school’s swimmers, while he also thanked the coaches for their sacrifices in preparation for the tournament.

“I want to extend my appreciation to the players and coaches for their hard work in preparation for the National SCUAA,” Gabayoyo said. “I also thank the WVSU’s administration, led by Dr. Joselito Villaruz, for their all-out support of our athletes.”

The Western Visayas swimming team finished fifth overall in the National SCUAA Games, as they ended up second overall in the men’s team and fourth overall in the distaff side.

Carla Meishien Lucero of Capiz State University, meanwhile, clinched her second gold medal in the week-long tournament after emerging on top in the women’s 200-meter dash event.

Lucero has earlier won the gold medal in the women’s 100-meter dash while also capturing a bronze medal in the 4×100-meter women’s relay event with Jovelyn Otucan, Shainne Lou Rosas, and Cheryl Moana Alvarez./PN
