SAN JOSE, Antique – A group of youths here initiated a project that aims to make the province a “fruit basket” of Western Visayas, planting around 200 fruit tree seedlings in Barangay Tubudan, San Remigio town.
Provincial Youth Development Affairs head Rexon Nodque on Sunday said the Antique Amazing Youth, an organization of young Antiqueños, conceptualized the project which could help their families and communities earn income.
He added group members will plant a variety of fruit-bearing trees in their respective municipalities – cacao in San Remigio; jackfruit in Sibalom; and pomelo in San Jose de Buenavista.
“Each member of the Antique Amazing Youth intends to plant three fruit-bearing trees per quarter,” Nodque said.
He added members would plant trees in their backyards and provide seedlings. Once the trees bear fruit, the harvest could either be consumed or sold in the market.
“We expect that after five years, there would already be a variety of fruit production in Antique,” Nodque said.
Gov. Rhodora Cadiao, who led the launching of the program, lauded the youth for their project.(With a report from PNA/PN)
