MANILA – Filipino gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo displayed his prowess by taking home three gold medals in the 9th Senior Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships over the weekend at the Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar.
The 22-year-old Yulo, who captured five gold medals in the 31st Southeast Asian Games recently, notched his gold medals in the floor exercise event and in vault and parallel bars apparatus.
The Filipino gymnastic prodigy clinched the elusive gold medal in the floor exercise event after garnering a total score of 14.933 points—6.300 points on first routine and 8.633 in second routine.
Kim Hansol of South Korea settled for silver medal with 14.333 and 8.333 on E score, while Yang Jiaxing of China completed the podium with 14.333 as well but with an E score of 8.233.
Yulo also annexed the Asian vault championship after topping the apparatus final with a combined 14.850 points to defeat Shiga Tachibana of Japan and Kim Hansol of South Korea.
Yulo, a two-time Olympian, opened up his vault campaign with his signature solid take on the Dragulescu which garnered him 14.900, followed by a well-executed Lopez for 14.800.
Yulo completed his gold medal haul in the Asian gymnastics competition after ruling the men’s parallel bars apparatus with a score of 15.167 points after performing with minimal error.
Yulo, a standout from Adamson University, almost added another medal to his collection after barely missing a podium finish in the rings apparatus with his 14.000 points.
With his earlier success in the individual all-around, where he finished in second place, Yulo also advanced into his third consecutive World Championships to be held later in the year in Liverpool, United Kingdom.
The men’s national team earlier ended in ninth place in the team competitions with 227.533, where gymnasts Juancho Besana, Jan Gywnn Timbang, John Ivan Cruz, and Justine Ace De Leon joined Yulo./PN
