‘ZERO DRUG ARRESTS’

Where have all the ‘pushers’ gone?

ILOILO – Seventeen municipal police stations have “zero accomplishment” in the campaign against illegal drugs from December 2017 to June 2018. Why? There would be a review, according to Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, director of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO).

During yesterday’s meeting of the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) at the provincial capitol, Tayaba identified the 17 police stations. These were:

* 1st District – Igbaras, Tubungan

* 2nd District – Alimodian, Leon, New Lucena

* 3rd District – Badiangan, Bingawan, Calinog, Lambunao, Maasin

* 4th District – Anilao, Dueñas

* 5th District – Batad, Carles, Concepcion, San Dionisio, San Rafael

The oversight committee on illegal drugs of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) would review the performance of the police stations, said Tayaba.

From what he had gathered from these police stations, Tayaba said there had been a marked decline in illegal drug activities in the 17 municipalities.

“Nakikita namin sa statistics that the number of operation is pababa because of the limited sources of illegal drugs dito sa probinsya and Iloilo City,” said Tayaba.

Just last week, the Regional Drug Enforcement Unit (RDEU) of the PRO-6 said the antidrug campaign constricted the entry shabu in the region, resulting to a drop in supply that in turn affected its price.

From between P8,000 to P10,000 per gram last year, shabu now cost P12,000 per gram, said RDEU chief Senior Inspector Kennith Bermejo.

Tayaba said he was also interested to know what happened to drug surrenderers in various municipalities.

Did they really turn their backs on drug trafficking and abuse, he asked.

In the town of Janiuay for example, said Tayaba, the police reported 260 drug surrenderers between December 2017 to June 2018.

“They have this huge number of surrenderers. Have they conducted antidrug operations? They have to explain this,” said Tayaba.

Data that IPPO submitted to the PPOC yesterday showed a total of 54 police antidrug operations across the province from January to June this year, resulting to the arrest of 76 suspects.

These were lower compared to the 118 police operations carried out in the same period last year, said Tayaba./PN
