ILOILO City – As part of their advocacy of curbing the problem on premarital sex in the country, Zonta Club of Iloilo II brought their Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Information Drive to Mandurriao National High School on Sept. 30.

Over 1,500 students of the school actively participated in the symposium which aims to inculcate to the minds of the teens the harms and possible effects of premarital sex and teenage pregnancy.

Zonta Club of Iloilo II’s Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Information Drive also serves as an awareness campaign for the students to better understand the risks and problems brought by premarital sex and teenage pregnancy not only to their health, but also to their future.
Dr. Cheryl Lyn Nuñez, an obstetrics gynecology doctor who is also a member of Zonta Club Iloilo II, served as the resource speaker and discussed some facts about teenage pregnancy, the common risks that it brings, and its effects to the young people.

Other members of Zonta Club of Iloilo II also joined during the fun question and answer portion wherein students won exciting prizes.
For the participants to better understand the issue, a radio drama participated by some students was also performed as part of the symposium.
Teenage pregnancy has been one of the most prevalent issues at present due to lack of proper education among the youth who are at the “vulnerable stage. “

To note, the results of the 2013 National Demographic and Health Survey of the Philippine Statistics Authority reveal that one in 10 young Filipino women aged 15-19 is already a mother. Of the number, 8 percent are already mothers, while the remaining 2 percent are pregnant with their first child.
Zonta Club of Iloilo II sees this problem alarming and recognizes the need to solve it immediately. Thus, they came up with the program which has already reached different schools both in the city and province of Iloilo.
It serves as one of their flagship programs in line with their thrust of impacting change in the community through empowering the women and the youth./PN
