FEU Lady Tams turn back UE in UAAP women’s volley

MANILA – Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws prevailed over University of the East Lady Warriors with a score of 25-19, 25-15, 22-25, 25-16 in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Chenie Tagaod erupted for 21 points built on 19 attacks; Gerzel Petallo had a double-double of 14 points and 10 digs; Faida Bakanke chipped in 10 points; and Tin Ubaldo ended with 21 excellent sets to go with seven points.

The Lady Tamaraws improved their slate to 8-4 to remain in the race for a twice-to-beat incentive in the Final Four below the National University Lady Bulldogs, De La Salle University Lady Spikers, and University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses all at 10-2.

After dominant wins in the first two sets, the Lady Tamaraws looked to have been wrapping up the match after a 22-19 lead in the third frame, but the Lady Warriors were able to string together six straight points to snatch the set away.

The Lady Tamaraws bounced back in the fourth set, opening up a huge 18-11 advantage following a 6-0 scoring run en route to completing the win in one hour and 54 minutes.

“Nakuha namin ‘yung gusto naming mangyari for this game na manalo pero sa loob ng panalo ay mas napatibay namin ‘yung sistema namin,” said Lady Tamaraws head coach Manolo Refugia.

Casiey Dongallo once again led the Lady Warriors with 17 points, 10 digs, and eight excellent receptions. Claire Castillo contributed 14 markers as they dropped to a 2-10 record

Meanwhile, the Lady Spikers battled back from a set down to beat Adamson University Lady Falcons, 17-25, 25-19, 25-11, 25-22, to continue their winning ways sans Negrense star Angel Canino.

Shevana Laput fired a personal season-high 24 points on 22 attacks and two blocks, while Thea Gagate added 12 points, including three blocks, for the defending champions Lady Spikers.

Jen Villegas had her best game this season with 16 points on 13 spikes, two blocks, and an ace, while Barbie Jamili chimed in with 11 points as they dropped to a 3-9 record./PN
