MANILA – Rain or Shine Elasto Painters leaned on a second quarter barrage to wallop Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, 93-71, in the 2022 PBA Commissioner’s Cup last night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Steve Taylor Jr. tallied 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Leonard Santillan and Mike Nieto added 15 and 10 markers, respectively, as the Painters improved to 1-1.

Clinging to a 25-23 lead after the first quarter, the Painters broke away in the second quarter with outside hits from Santillan, Norbert Torres and Anton Asistio as the lead reached 55-28 at the half.

The Gin Kings opened the third quarter aggressively and trimmed the deficit to within 19 points several times but back-to-back inside hits by Santillan widened it to 72-49.

The Painters continued its rampage in the fourth quarter with connections from Jewel Ponferrada and Rey Nambatac as the lead reached its largest at 87-55 via a Nieto triple.

Justin Brownlee ended with 20 points, 16 rebounds and five assists, while Jamie Malonzo debuted with 14 points and eight rebounds as the Gin Kings dropped to 0-1.

In the first game, Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots survived a late run by the Terrafirma Dyip to pull off a 100-92 and open the midseason conference on a winning note.

After seeing their double-digit lead turned to an 88-86 deficit, the Hotshots got a free throw from Ian Sangalang and back-to-back hits from Adrian Wong and import Nick Rakocevic for a 91-88 lead.

The Dyip notched the lead for the last time at 92-91 via a conversion by Lester Prosper but the Hotshots went on a 9-0 blast from Paul Lee, Jiovani Jalalon and Rakocevic to clincth the win.

Rakocevic finished the game with double-double 45 points and 25 rebounds, Jalalon chipped in 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while Sangalang had 10 markers for the Hotshots./PN
